Heating and cooling equipment installed in an attic needs to be accessible for regular servicing and repairs. But in many homes, reaching that equipment means climbing through a small opening, balancing on exposed framing or navigating loose insulation.

Nobleton — Furnace Access & Safe Walkway

Challenge: Every time the homeowner or a service technician needed to reach the furnace, they had to bring in a ladder, clear enough space in the closet to position it, climb through a narrow attic opening, and then navigate exposed framing and loose insulation to reach the equipment.

Solution: We installed a FAKRO attic ladder, lighting and a dedicated plywood walkway, creating a clear, stable route from the attic entrance to the furnace for servicing and maintenance.

Armour Heights — A Difficult Furnace Access Problem

Challenge: The furnace was located on the opposite side of the attic opening. The existing access provided no permanent ladder and very little room to work, and once inside the attic the homeowner had to get past the open access point to reach the furnace.

Solution: We installed a space-saving FAKRO scissor ladder, built a stable standing area around the opening and created a removable platform that covers the opening once the ladder is retracted. This provides a much safer route across the attic toward the furnace, along with attic lighting.

Vaughan — New Attic Access & Storage

Challenge: The home's existing attic access was located inside a closet and was too small to use conveniently. Every trip into the attic meant clearing space in the closet, bringing in a ladder and climbing through a narrow opening. Inside, deep blown insulation, electrical wiring and central-vacuum piping made the attic difficult to navigate and prevented the space from being used effectively for storage.

Solution: We created a new hallway access, installed a FAKRO attic ladder and attic lighting, and worked around and rerouted existing obstacles where necessary. A large raised plywood storage deck was then constructed above the insulation, transforming previously unusable attic space into a safe, accessible and practical storage area.

East York — Attic Ladder Replacement

Challenge: The existing attic ladder had become unsafe, with a damaged spring mechanism and a thin, poorly fitting plywood hatch that allowed air leakage. The original ceiling opening was also larger than the dimensions required for a current replacement ladder.

Solution: We removed the old ladder and trim, reframed the existing opening and installed a new FAKRO attic ladder with an insulated hatch. New wider trim was installed to cover the difference between the old and new openings, creating a clean finished appearance while avoiding unnecessary plaster and ceiling repairs.

The Beaches — New Attic Access & Storage

Challenge: The home's existing attic access was a small opening inside a linen closet, making the attic difficult to reach and impractical for storage. The plaster-and-lath hallway ceiling also had a noticeable slope, making the location and finishing of a new opening more challenging.

Solution: We created a new attic opening in the hallway, installed a FAKRO attic ladder and lighting, and built a raised storage deck above the insulation. The new access provides a safer, much more convenient way into the attic while creating substantial usable storage space.
